“So how did you end up staying with my mom?” he asks. “That... requires a lot of context to answer,” I say. “You won’t tell me anything, will you?” He’s understandably irritated. He discovers a boy living with his mother, and no one will explain to him why. Plus, I’m unintentionally foiling every attempt of his to make conversation. “Can we start again?” I ask. “Can we start with you? And then I promise I’ll answer some of your questions.” This will at least give me time to make something up. I may just decide to tell him the truth. “Okay,” says David. “You know what I’m studying. What else do you want to know? My favorite color, my favorite animal?” He smiles to hide his ambiguity about me. Until I’ve given him answers, he won’t feel comfortable. “How many guys have you fucked?” I ask. I reason that if I put him on the defensive, he’s less likely to question the lies I tell him. He’ll be thinking too much about himself. “Jesus,” he mutters. But he’s a college kid, and eager to assure me of his experience. “About... seven.” “Seven?” “What? Is that a lot or a little?” “No,” is all I answer. “Have you been in a serious relationship?” “Noo. Most of the guys I meet are... too superficial.” “So you’ve chosen not to be in a relationship,” I say. “Yeah. Yes, of course.” “Would you like to?” “I don’t know. Why are you so interested?” “Just asking,” I say. “What about girls? Did you ever fuck a girl?” “Uh... no,” he says. “Why would I? I’m gay.” “Some guys want to try it at least once,” I say, but I’m ready with a story. I remain silent for a moment, as if psyching myself up to tell the hard tale. “My parents were murdered when I was sixteen,” I start. “Two girls from my class did it. They wanted to prove to themselves they could live beyond good and evil. I was meant to die too. They invited themselves over for dinner one Thursday evening. It was strange from the beginning. I had never been friends with them, although it’s not like we weren't on speaking terms. Jessica and Joanna those were their names. We were living in a tent city, and the spirit of community engendered in such circumstances made us more trusting. We all needed connections. Maybe they were trying to broaden their circle.” I’m really getting into my story now. David is enrapt. I needn’t have bothered causing him discomfort. “So as we ate, we made all the normal conversation. Their plans, their interests, so on. It struck us as strange that they seemed not to want to talk they’d asked to come over, after all but they were totally polite, evincing no aggression until they offered to clear the table.

That’s when the violence started. My parents and I were all sitting on one side of the table, which made it easier for them.
